HAPPY INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ERADICATION OF POVERTY.

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (17 October) underscores that ending poverty is about dignity, justice, and belonging, not just income. This year's theme focuses on ending social and institutional maltreatment by ensuring respect and effective support for families, with a clear goal: put the furthest behind first and build institutions that help families stay together, thrive, and shape their own futures.

Families in poverty often face stigma and punitive practices in places meant to help: schools, clinics, welfare offices, and child protection systems. Single mothers, Indigenous families, and historically discriminated groups report judgment and control that erode trust and agency, sometimes culminating in poverty-driven family separation with lasting emotional and social harm to children and parents.

To change course, the Day’s theme urges three shifts:

1. From control to care: Design services that start with trust. Reduce punitive conditionalities, streamline documentation, and prioritize respectful, person-centred interactions.
2. From surveillance to support: Rebalance investments away from monitoring and removal toward family-strengthening services: income support, quality childcare, adequate housing, mental health care, parenting support, and access to justice.
3. From top-down to co-created solutions: Involve families living in poverty at every stage—assessment, design, budgeting, delivery, and evaluation—so policies reflect real needs and constraints.

Supporting families advances multiple SDGs (SDG—1, SDG—2, SDG—3, SDG—4, SDG—5, SDG—8, SDG—10, SDG—16) through coherent, jointly delivered policies across social protection, education, health, housing, and employment. This agenda translates commitments into concrete, measurable change by respecting, protecting, and supporting families.

Together, we will eradicate poverty and enhance transparency and accountability.

Theme: Understanding the Basics of Peacebuilding, Crisis Management, and Conflict Resolution
Training Years: 2023, 2024, 2025 & 2026

As part of its commitment to promoting the ideals of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the UNESCO Culture of Peace Programme, the UN-POLAC Foundation successfully organized a Six (6) Weeks In-House Training Programme for members in 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026.

The training was designed to strengthen the knowledge, leadership capacity, and practical skills of members in the areas of peacebuilding, crisis management, and conflict resolution.

Participants received intensive instruction through lectures, interactive discussions, case studies, practical exercises, and group presentations. The curriculum emphasized understanding the root causes of conflict, effective communication, negotiation, mediation, reconciliation, crisis prevention, early warning and response mechanisms, and community-based peacebuilding strategies.

These topics align with widely recognized peacebuilding and conflict management practices.
Upon successful completion of the programme, participants were better equipped to serve as Peace Advocates, promote peaceful coexistence within their communities, support conflict prevention initiatives, and contribute meaningfully to sustainable development and national peacebuilding efforts.

The annual six-week training programme remains one of the flagship capacity-building initiatives of the UN-POLAC Foundation, reflecting the organization's unwavering commitment to building a network of competent peace ambassadors dedicated to fostering peace, justice, security, and social harmony across Nigeria and beyond.

Since 2022, as part of its commitment to promoting quality education and advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the UN-POLAC Foundation implemented the School Readiness Programme Initiative to support pupils and students in public schools across Lagos State.

Through this initiative, the Foundation donated thousands of exercise books, writing materials, and other educational supplies to deserving pupils and students to encourage learning, improve school preparedness, and ease the financial burden on parents and guardians.

Beneficiary schools include:

• Liberty College, Ayobo, Alimosho Local Government Area
• Government Secondary School, Ikoyi
• UNILAG Secondary School, Akoka, Yaba
• Estate Primary School I, Ojo
• Estate Primary School II, Ojo
• Iba Primary School, Ojo
• Several other public primary and secondary schools across Lagos State.

The UN-POLAC School Readiness Programme reflects the Foundation's unwavering dedication to educational development, youth empowerment, community service, and the promotion of a culture of peace. By equipping students with essential learning materials, the Foundation seeks to inspire academic excellence, increase school attendance, and contribute to the development of responsible future leaders.

National Secondary Schools Sensitization Programme on the Dangers of Cultism, Criminal Activities, and Youth Violence in Nigeria.

Youth sensitization programme for universities & tertiary institutions students across Nigeria on Peace building, security & crisis management between January and April 2024.
